What is Free Audio Visualizer for OBS Studio?

Vortexia is a free audio visualizer for OBS Studio that needs no plugin at all. It runs as a Browser Source: you configure the look on a dashboard, copy one URL, and paste it into OBS. The distinction matters more than it sounds. An OBS plugin is a compiled binary tied to a specific OBS version and operating system, so it breaks when OBS updates, needs separate Windows/macOS/Linux builds, and requires permission to install software — which is why so many streaming setups at work, at school or on a shared machine cannot use one. A Browser Source is built into OBS and has been since version 21, so there is nothing to install, nothing to update, and nothing to break. Sound drives the picture per frequency band rather than by overall loudness: a 128-bin FFT is read every frame, so bass drives the pulse and zoom, mids morph the geometry and treble affects colour. A kick and a cymbal at the same volume produce visibly different motion. Free means free rather than a trial: 720p at 30fps with a small watermark, three engines, no time limit and no card. Paid plans from $4.99 a month remove the watermark and add 1080p at 60fps.

How to use Free Audio Visualizer for OBS Studio

  1. Pick your look. Open vortexia.live, choose a preset and enable audio so you can see it react before committing.
  2. Copy the Browser Source URL. From the dashboard, click Copy OBS Link. The URL is token-authenticated and unique to your account.
  3. Add it in OBS. Sources -> Add -> Browser. Paste the URL, set 1920x1080, and tick Control Audio via OBS.
  4. Layer it. Drag the source below your game capture and webcam so it becomes a living background rather than an overlay.

Frequently asked questions

Is this actually a plugin?
No, and that is the point. It uses the Browser Source that ships with OBS Studio, so there is nothing to download, nothing to place in a plugins folder and nothing that breaks when OBS updates. If you can paste a URL you can use it.
What settings should the Browser Source use?
Width 1920, height 1080 to match a standard canvas, and tick "Control Audio via OBS" if you want the visuals reacting to your stream mix rather than your microphone. Leave "Shutdown source when not visible" unchecked so the visual does not restart every scene change.
Will it slow my game down?
It renders on the GPU alongside your game, so it is not free, but the 2D engines cost roughly 1ms per frame at 1080p. If your framerate matters more than resolution, Performance Mode drops the render to 720p or 480p while OBS still outputs at full canvas size.
Does it react to game audio, music, or my voice?
Whichever you route to it. With "Control Audio via OBS" it reacts to your stream mix. Left to the browser it uses your default input device, so DJs and musicians usually point it at an audio interface or a virtual cable such as VB-Cable or BlackHole to get a clean digital feed instead of room noise.
What is the catch with the free tier?
It renders at 720p and 30fps with a small watermark, gives you three of the eight engines, and connects to Twitch. There is no trial period and no card. Plus at $4.99 a month removes the watermark, unlocks 1080p at 60fps, all eight engines including the 3D ones, and YouTube, Kick and TikTok.
